When the nine officers of the Clare City Police Department learned their town’s only doughnut shop was closing for good, they sprang into action. The 113-year-old bakery was an icon and needed to be protected and served! Besides, there were already 11 empty stores in the three blocks of downtown Clare, Michigan. So, with no idea how to make doughnuts, run a business or where to start, the officers stepped up to save the doughnuts and, in doing so, revived a small town. They expected to simply keep the bakery open, but from day one, the bakery business exploded. They garnered national and international media attention, created three other locations, nearly went bankrupt, and came back stronger than ever. This book is more than an American success story, it’s a lesson for fresh marketing ideas and how civic-minded people can make a difference in any town. Want to know how they did it? This is their story.
