中華民國是位於東亞的共和制國家，自1912年成立至1971年退出聯合國期間為國際公認的「中國」代表政權，現因實際控制領土及政治狀況通稱「臺灣」。實轄領土面積36,197平方公里，包括臺灣本島及附屬島嶼、澎湖群島、部分福建沿岸島嶼與部分南海諸島。中央政府位於臺北市，最大城市為新北市。總人口約2,359萬，主要由漢族與臺灣原住民族組成。國家語言為各固有族群使用之自然語言及臺灣手語，通用標準國語，書寫使用正體中文。 辛亥革命爆發兩個月後，中華民國於1912年1月1日宣告成立。同年2月清宣統帝頒布《退位詔書》，中華民國繼承原大清帝國疆域。經北洋政府時期、國民政府時期而於1947年在制度上進入憲政時期，後因動員戡亂戰爭中對中國共產黨的戰事接連失利，中央政府於1949年底播遷臺灣。1958年青海完全失陷後迄今，中華民國的有效統治領土僅剩臺灣地區。
韓戰爆發後，在美援挹注下，臺灣經濟快速發展，與南韓、香港、新加坡並稱亞洲四小龍，現名列世界人均生產總值第15位與第22大經濟體，居非聯合國成員國之首，被視為已開發國家。1980年代末的民主運動，使中華民國從一黨專政的威權制國家，演變成兩黨制政黨生態與直接民權的國家。中華民國是當今世界最自由的國家之一，人權狀況極佳，女性參政率在世界名列前茅，是亞洲首個法制化同性婚姻的國家。

This yearbook mainly uses statistical tables to report the R.O.C. social-economic development in Taiwan-Fukien Area for the period from 1978 to 2007.
1.To facilitate international comparison, a cross-reference table of the correspondent statistical table numbers between the 50th issue of the United Nations' Statistical Yearbook and the R.O.C. 2007 Statistical Yearbook is placed before the list of contents in this publication.
2.The introduction to compilation methodology for each section of statistical tables is condensed to a maximum of two pages and put at the start of the related section.
