MILLENIUM Approaches - the title of Part One of Tony Kushner's theatre epic ""Angels in America."" It is a nerve-wracking concept - the new millenium - as though the weight of history and the fate of the human species will come crashing down upon us. The present decade also marks the end of the Cold War, and the centennial of the invention of cinema. The latest shopping mall fails to distract us from the awful thought - both the world and its arts have grown, inexorably, old.

Here in the British colony of Hong Kong, the fin-de-siecle angst takes on a slightly different form. The battle cry is 1997 approaches (incidentally, 1997 is also the doom year prophesized by Shoko Asahara, leader of Aum Shinrikyo, the terrorist Japanese secret sect).
