Many people still read Napoleon Hill's iconic book 'Think And Grow Rich' but Hill took it for granted that his readers knew the men he had studied. And indeed his contemporaries did know them, just as we are familiar with the life stories of men like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Bill Clinton and indeed all the successful and famous people of our age.
For many of today's readers of Think and Grow Rich the biographies of men like Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, The Wright Brothers and Theodore Roosevelt might well be a little hazy. Others whom Hill studied such as Robert Dollar or Edward A. Filene to name just two may be completely unheard of by this generation. Hill's Heroes is a collection of short biographies of around one hundred and fifty of the five hundred or so men and women Hill studied in order to divine and disseminate the secrets of their success.
Of course the book will be of particular interest to anyone who has read Think And Grow Rich or The Secrets Of Success and will put Hill's writings very much into context for the modern reader. However, the book also stands alone on its own merit as a record of some of the major achievements of the early twentieth century. The great inventors, business people and political leaders of the age have affected our lives more than we may realise.
Without Edison's invention of the electric light bulb there would have been no impetus for an electricity generating industry with power supplied to homes, take that away and there would have been no impetus either for the invention of all the electrical appliances from microwaves to TV sets, washing machines and vacuum cleaners et al which we now take for granted. As an aside it might be noted that the great whales would probably have been taken to extinction since most homes in the USA where illuminated by lamps run on whale oil.
The Wright Brothers' claim to be the first to achieve powered flight and Alexander Graham Bell's claim to be first with the telephone are disputed by some, yet the Wright Brothers made powered flight controllable and Alexander Graham Bell's pioneering acoustic work was utilised by his rival. These men and others who you'll find in the pages of Hill's Heroes truly shaped the world we live in today.
