The Secret Agent: A Simple Tale, by Russian author Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was first published in 1907. This edition has been transcribed from the original 1907 edition initially published by Methuen & Co. The story predominately deals with the life of a secret agent, Mr Verloc and is set in London in 1886. Mr Verloc is instructed to destroy the Greenwich Observatory through a bomb explosion. Verloc is married, owns a pornographic shop and his friends are largely ineffectual as terrorists and their actions are known to the police.
“The novel deals broadly with the notions of anarchism, espionage, and terrorism. It portrays anarchist or revolutionary groups before many of the social uprisings of the twentieth century.” (Citation from Wikipedia: The free Encyclopaedia)
