"Like very many families we very much looked forward to our holidays and the precious time to step off of the treadmill and relax together. Both our children were particularly enjoying languages at school so we decided help their studies and renew our love of France…"
Thus begins a voyage of discovery into French culture, customs and cuisine – and a deep sense of belonging.
But when a mystery sickness takes hold of Paulette's life, her dreams and hopes are gradually stripped away. Eventually she finds herself alone in a small hamlet, unable to work, suffering intense pain and with many difficult questions.
Filled with humorous anecdotes and sharp insights about life in France, Paulette's testimony demonstrates how God can restore our lives– not only for our good but for the blessing of the many people we encounter along the way.
If you want to be assured that Jesus Christ is alive and interested in His people, read this delightful and heart-warming story. Throughout the time Paulette and her husband were preparing 'Joie de Vie' my wife and I had the privilege, together with others, of praying for each phase of the process. Moreover, having ourselves founded a Christian Conference Centre for the Armed Forces, we know that what is described in this inspiring book is only the half of it, and I was struck again by the greatness of the God we serve – a God who is able to take what is offered, no matter how weak or ill-equipped and make something wonderful out of it.
We have already experienced the warmth and sheer delight of visiting St. Fort sur le Né. So, to any Serviceman or woman considering a break, I'd say, "Go!" You will encounter a right royal welcome in an enchanting, healing and peaceful setting.
Wing Commander Dan Gleed E P Cert FCMI RAF (Ret'd)
Paulette is one of those people for whom hard work, guts and determination are a way of life. This attitude is so much of a part of her that I doubt whether she realises what a powerful example she sets to us all, which shows clearly in her book. There is no doubt that it is a record of her faith and how she has overcome the challenges to it along the way. It would have been easy for her to fall into the trap of writing something that sought to enlist our sympathy but this she has not done. In a paradoxical way her book is always upbeat, even at those times when she describes herself as lonely, in pain and scared during the treatment for her ailment. I was reminded of St Paul's attitude to his 'Thorn in the flesh'. Her commitment to prayer is clear and a fine example to us all. The book is worth reading for that alone.
I have had the privilege of staying with the Jones' at their home in France, and I can vouch that despite all the energy around Paulette it is an oasis of peace and tranquillity. The Joie de Vie project, which she so lovingly describes, has turned out to be everything she and her husband wanted it to be, and I have no doubt that this book will be an inspiration to many.

Paulette tells her story in a very humble manner that is inspiring, honest and easy to read. It left me rejoicing at God's work in her life and how He is using her in France today. I am delighted that she has written this book so that others can be encouraged that God does heal today.
Frances Cunningham
Retired military wife
Paulette tells her remarkable story with honesty and clarity. How does an independent-minded and self-reliant coper deal with being stripped bare like a peeled orange? Her experience of suffering chronic pain whilst still attempting to be a good mother and an exemplary military wife leaves her feeling overwhelmed by fear, despair and depression. From the wreckage of her well-constructed dreams there emerges a growing recognition of God's love for her. The Pied-Piper storyteller figure of her childhood, Jesus, draws alongside as a new, unchangeable friend. As she learns to lean on him rather than her own resources the story she tells is one of healing and re-building as she allows herself to be led on and adventure far more fulfilling and purposeful than she had ever imagined.
This is a story to lift and encourage anyone who is struggling to cope; anyone who cries out 'Why me?' Paulette's story allows us to dare to hold on to hope and to dare to trust there will be light at the end of the tunnel.

Former Curate, St. Firmin’s Thurlby
Former Assistant Chaplain, Oundle School
Paulette’s testimony illustrates that despite her trials and difficulties she remained convinced that her afflictions were working towards her restoration, and a life beyond her expectations. Her secret was that she had an encounter with Jesus which made all the difference. It led to her spending time prayerfully looking into the Scriptures with an openness of heart and mind. As result, her passion for Jesus and France has brought joy and blessing to the lives of many of her fellow travellers.
Squadron Leader Bob Abbott MBE (Ret'd)
After spending much of her life striving to be a capable military wife and mother whilst also studying and working, Paulette spurns spiritual guidance preferring to believe that her life is full of "spookily fluky" coincidences! But discovering that nothing has occurred by accident, Paulette finds that her life is a navigator's chart inscribed by a Supreme hand with markers, routes, targets and a safe path home. Whether or not you believe in the Almighty, Paulette's journey is beautifully written in a gently amusing and engaging manner. You will want to turn the page to read on and find out what twists and turns her life holds. From a childhood passion for making little 'paperbacks' to a book of a life well lived – now that’s a journey to Another Promised Land!

Chairman, RAF Association Sud-Ouest France
