Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré (1832 – 1883) was great French artist, printmaker, illustrator and sculptor. He was without any doubt one of the most prodigious artists of the 19th century. At barely fifteen years of age he began a career as a caricaturist and then professional illustrator – which brought him international fame – before embracing all areas of creativity: drawing, painting, watercolour, engraving and sculpture. In this Gustave Doré executed the great dramatic textual material and history of our human beings. Nowhere else but in the Bible he gathered all his talent to show people our beginning. This book contains the Creation scenes, the horrifying visions of the Flood, the battle sequences with their monumental crowds, the plates depicting the life of Jesus — many of which have now become the standard iconography — and finally the vision of the New Jerusalem, Doré reached the fullest expressions of his extraordinary talent.
