Through The Fray (Illustrated)

The story is laid in Yorkshire, England, at the start of the 19th century. It was a time food prices, caused by shortage during the war and the start of the industrial age drove the working-classes to desperation. They banded together in a wide-spread organization known as the Luddite Society. There is plenty of action and adventure in the tale, but its chief interest lies in the character of the hero, and the manner he is put on trial for his life.

This edition of the book contains 11 of the original illustrations, each carefully rejuvenated.

The Society was named after Ned Ludd, a youth who had allegedly smashed two stocking frames in the textile industry during the late 18th century. His name had become emblematic of machine destroyers and those who reject technological advances.

George Alfred Henty (1832-1902), was a prolific English novelist and a special correspondent. He is best known for his historical adventure stories that were popular in the late 19th century. His works include Out on the Pampas (1871), The Young Buglers (1880), With Clive in India (1884) and Wulf the Saxon (1895).
