Pearl Zane Grey (1872-1939) was a prolific American author of adventure stories, particularly westerns.  A college baseball player and dentist, Grey began writing fiction in the early 1900s, eventually writing more than 90 books.  In addition to westerns, Grey wrote baseball stories, travel, and fishing stories.  His works proved so popular that a western magazine devoted to his work remained in publication for more than thirty years after his death.
