Mancing is a quiet town, unused to sensation. But this all changes when Jeremiah Harding goes missing, along with £500 belonging belonging to the local lodge of the Oddfellows fraternity. Not long afterwards, Mancing is rocked by the gruesome discovery, in a local millpond, of a headless corpse with both hands removed. Scotland Yard arrives on the scene in the person of Inspector Bulcraig, who has also enlisted the help of forensic experts Arnold Keene and Bernard Young. Together with the local police, the trio set to work to solve this terrible and brutal murder.
