Drawing on IDEA'S Response to Intervention (RtI) model, Rasinski (literacy education, Kent State University) offers a framework of generalized strategies for teaching struggling K-12 readers. The instructional strategies and activities described are arranged around general areas of focus, such as phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The strategies can be generalized to many situations and modified for different teaching and learning contexts. Additional chapters describe topics such as curriculum development, assessment, and working with parents. About 15 pages of appendices provide lists of common word families, word parts, book making ideas, sources of information on word histories and word play, and a sample letter to parents. This fourth edition offers a greater focus on evidence-based research and how it translates into classroom practice, plus more suggestions for teaching English language learners, and updated ideas for using technology.
