Informal debt collection practices are rampant across many EU Member States while consumer debt levels and defaults are escalating at an alarming rate, fuelled by the lingering aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and high inflation. While the EU has introduced some limited protections, systemic flaws, industry lobbying, and fragmented laws continue to enable abusive tactics that violate debtor rights and social norms.

Cătălin-Gabriel Stănescu, Associate Professor in Private Law, University of Southern Denmark

Cătălin-Gabriel Stănescu is an Associate Professor in Private International Law at the University of Southern Denmark. His research focuses on consumer financial protection, informal debt collection, financial regulation, and digital law. In 2023, he was appointed Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Banking and Finance Law at the National University of Singapore (2024). Dr Stănescu has been a visiting researcher at several renowned institutions including the Max Planck Institute for Private International and Comparative Law, the European University Institute, and the Centre for Commercial Law Studies at Queen Mary University of London.
