Championing a Public Good: A Call to Advocate for Higher Education

Examines how higher education leaders advanced different public arguments to counter metric- and market-based proposals of the Spellings Commission and makes the case for education as a public good, advocating for college leadership that prioritizes deliberation and offering rhetorical strategies for higher education advocacy.

Carolyn D. Commer is Assistant Professor of English and Director of the Rhetoric and Writing PhD program at Virginia Tech. She earned her PhD from Carnegie Mellon University, where she served as President of the Graduate Student Assembly and the Northeast Legislative Director for the National Association of Graduate and Professional Students.
