Recent research with brain scanning technologies shows that patients in a coma are more aware than was previously thought and that their chances for recovery are greater. This book describes Process-Oriented Coma Work, a system of body-centered techniques developed by Arnold and Amy Mindell for communicating with coma patients. The approach is described in the context of the field of consciousness studies and recent developments in psychology, medicine, and alternative healing methods, and is illustrated with many stories of actual patients. The book is accessible to caregivers, family members, therapists, healers, and healthcare professionals, with an extensive glossary of scientific and philosophical concepts developed in the book, as well as definitions of medical and Process Work terms. An annotated bibliography lists books on nursing, consciousness and coma (including first-hand accounts of patients), death and dying, mind-body medicine, brain injury treatment, healing and coma, Process Work, and dementia and Alzheimer's. A list of organizations and web sites for resources related to coma and brain injury is also included. Morin and Reiss are faculty members at the Process Work Institute Graduate School in Portland, OR. Annotation 穢2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
