Generic Enrichment in Plutarch’s Lives

This volume addresses the important literary phenomenon of ’generic enrichment’ in Plutarch’s Parallel Lives, examining the ways in which features of other genres are deployed and incorporated in Plutarch’s biographies and the effects of this on the texts themselves and readers’ responses to them.

Chrysanthos S. Chrysanthou is Assistant Professor of Ancient Greek at the University of Cyprus. His last book, a literary commentary on ＂Septimius Severus and Herodian＂, is published by C.H. Beck (Munich) in 2024 as part of the Zetemata series. In 2023 he was awarded funding of 1,49 million euros from the ERC for his project ＂Group Minds in Ancient Narrative＂.

Timothy Duff is Professor of Greek at the University of Reading. He is author of Plutarch’s Lives: Exploring Virtue and Vice (Oxford University Press) as well as numerous papers on Plutarch. He is also editor and co-translator of Plutarch: The Age of Alexander (Penguin).
