The Routledge Handbook of Volunteering in Events, Sport and Tourism

This timely handbook examines the most contemporary, controversial and cutting-edge issues related to the involvement of volunteers in the fields of events, sport and tourism.

Split into thematic sections, the primary areas covered include: key disciplinary approaches to understanding volunteerism, international contexts, managing volunteers, the impacts and legacies of volunteering and future trends in these sectors including online and digital volunteering. Commonalities and differences of volunteering in these sectors are drawn out throughout the volume. A diverse range of case studies are examined including the 2007 UEFA Under 21 Championship hosted by Poland, the development of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, the Vancouver, London and Pyeong Chang Olympic Games, Belgium’s National Day in 2019, the Puffing Billy railway in Australia, as well as many other examples looking at destination services organizations, museums, grassroots associations, corporate events, community events and visitor attractions.

Drawing on the academic and practical expertise of over 50 authors from across the globe, the handbook provides an invaluable resource for all those with an interest in volunteering in these sectors, encouraging dialogue across disciplinary boundaries and areas of study in order to advance volunteering research and practice in the fields of events, sport and tourism.

Kirsten Holmes is a Professor at Curtin University, Australia, and is an international expert in volunteering in events, sport and tourism contexts. She has written extensively on volunteering within events, tourism and more generally. Kirsten’s research has been funded by the Australian and UK Governments; the Australian Research Council; and the International Olympic Committee. She is currently investigating the event legacies of the Olympic Games 1988-2000 for the International Olympic Committee. She is currently Chair of the Council for Australasian Tourism and Hospitality Education (CAUTHE) and a member of Volunteering Western Australia’s research committee. She also has expertise in developing sustainable events and festivals and is the lead author of the Routledge textbook　Events and sustainability　(2015).

Leonie Lockstone-Binney is an Associate Professor in and Research Director for the Department of Tourism, Sport and Hotel Management at Griffith University, Australia. Leonie’s research relates to event and tourism volunteering having published over 70 peer-reviewed articles and received competitive research funding from the Australian Research Council and the International Olympic Committee. Leonie is Associate Editor of the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management and has roles on the editorial boards of Event Management, the International Journal of Event and Festival Management and Frontiers in Sports and Active Living.

Karen A. Smith is Professor of Tourism Management in the Wellington School of Business and Government at Te Heranga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. Karen’s research concerns volunteers and their management in the tourism and events sectors, and more broadly in non-profit organisations and employer-supported volunteering.　　Karen is a past-Chair of Volunteering New Zealand and was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to education and volunteering.

Richard Shipway is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sport and Event Management at Bournemouth University, UK. His research interests focus on sport tourism, Olympic studies, the impacts and legacies of international sport events, crisis and disaster　management　for sport, volunteering at mega sports events, and sport ethnography. His　previous　work has explored a series of Olympic related research themes　ranging from resident perception studies to Olympic tourism. Richard’s other research interests are linked to the experiences of endurance athletes, most notably distance runners　and cyclists. He is the Regional Editor (Europe) for the International Journal of Event and Festival Management (IJEFM) and　Reviews　and Commentaries Editor　for the Journal of Sport and Tourism.　　Since 2010 Richard has served　on the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)’s high profile Peer Review College, refereeing grant proposals within social sciences.
