Yuko Tsushima (1947-2016) is considered one of the most important Japanese writers of her generation. She was the daughter of the novelist Osamu Dazai, who took his own life when she was one year old. She wrote more than a dozen novels, including Territory of Light and Woman Running in the Mountains, and won many awards, including the Izumi Kyoka Prize for Literature, the Kawabata Prize, and the Tanizaki Prize.
Lisa Hofmann-Kuroda is a Japanese-to-English literary translator based in New York City. Born in Tokyo and raised in Texas, she received her BA from Wesleyan University and her PhD from UC Berkeley. With Allison Markin Powell, she is the cotranslator of Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s Kappa.
