Dancer and choreographer Burrows, currently a resident artist at Kaaitheater Brussels, leads workshops in which people from different forms of dance talk about the act of choreographing. He has discovered that, on the whole, the questions and ideas that preoccupy choreographers are shared across aesthetic borders and dance types. His notebooks from the workshops, his own ideas and observations, and perspectives from many dance artists form the material for this volume. It is more inspiration than instruction, he says: a book cannot teach anyone how to choreograph. There are no pictures to bias interpretation of the text. Among the topics are exploration and risk, breaking the rules, originality and paradox, audience, simplifying all this, and forgetting all this.
