Beder (social work, Yeshiva U.) has assembled an important book for a wide readership. She solicited contributions from specialists, inviting them to write about their area of expertise regarding service members and their families, include assessment and intervention approaches, and direct the material to a civilian audience. Eighteen contributions discuss the importance of understanding military culture, the fact that no one leaves the military unchanged, treatment of war-induced post-traumatic stress disorder (a civilian's guide), brain injury, survivors of sexual harassment and assault, needs of the wounded (from Iraq, Afghanistan), the physiology of warzone exposure, family resilience, suicidal risk assessment and response, substance abuse, services (the VA, animal assisted intervention), and ethical challenges when working with the military, among other topics.
