Omar Tyree is an author, publisher, lecturer, and performance poet. He was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he graduated from the prestigious Central High School in 1987. While attending the University of Pittsburgh to become a pharmacist, Tyree discovered an ability to write. In 1989, Tyree transferred to Howard University to pursue print journalism. He became the first student to have a featured column, "Food for Thought," published in The Hilltop, the school's award-winning newspaper.

After graduation Tyree worked as a reporter and assistant editor at The Capital Spotlight, served as the chief reporter for News Dimensions, and freelanced for the Washington View Magazine. Tyree also became one of the youngest African-American male journalists to be published in The Washington Post's commentary page with his views on the lack of attention that positive young men receive in the American media.

In 1992 Omar Tyree embarked on a fiction-writing career. He organized MARS Productions, a sole-proprietorship, to publish his first novel, Colored, On White Campus. It sold well enough to produce funds to publish his second effort, Flyy-Girl in April of 1993. His third book, Capital City: The Chronicles of a D.C. Underworld, was published the following year. In August of 1995, Omar Tyree signed a two-book deal with Simon & Schuster which included the republication of Flyy-Girl which went on to become a national bestseller in hardcover.
