From the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), this 13-chapter textbook outlines evidence-based recommendations for exercise training with special populations who have chronic diseases or disabilities, and others who differ from the overall population. Strength and conditioning specialists and others mainly from the US address the benefits of exercise and the costs of inactivity, as well as challenges to exercise training in special populations; health appraisals, fitness assessments, and medical clearance processes; and recommendations for musculoskeletal, metabolic, pulmonary, cardiovascular, immunologic or hematologic, neuromuscular, and cognitive conditions or disorders, as well as cancer, working with children and adolescents, working with older adults, and female-specific conditions, such as pregnancy, menopause, and the female athlete triad. Each chapter describes the pathology and pathophysiology of the condition, the effects of exercise programs, exercise recommendations (with specific training modifications), precautions, and contraindications; medications and the effects on exercise responses and adaptations; and application of recommendations, through a case study. The text can be used as a resource for the Certified Special Population Specialist certification examination. Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
