Fischer (languages, Edinburgh Napier U., UK) presents the first English translation of Nicolaus von Jeroschin's Chronicle of Prussia, written in middle German verse in the mid-14th century as a history of the Teutonic Knights from the foundation of the order in 1190 through to 1331. The purpose of the work was to proclaim the greatness of the Teutonic Order as well as to establish the centrality of Prussia as a locus for crusades. It includes a description of the founding of the Order, a meditation on its ideology of crusading warfare, and an account of the wars of the Teutonic Knights against the Prussians and Lithuanians from 1230 through to the commission of the Chronicle by the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order.
