Language, Culture, and Community in Teacher Education

Sponsored by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), a national, voluntary association of higher education institutions and related organizations, this text is a product of a 2003-2006 project undertaken by the AACTE's Committee on Multicultural Education addressing the preparation of all teachers to serve culturally and linguistically diverse children. Following an introductory chapter explaining tensions in educational efforts to address multiculturalism in the context of strong values toward Western heritage, 14 chapters by 27 American academics and researchers explore existing knowledge about the diverse student populations in America's schools, the varied efforts in teacher education to work with teacher candidates and teacher education faculty, and policy efforts by state, federal, and professional organizations.
