The Proliferation of Rights: Moral Progress or Empty Rhetoric?

This book explores how the assertion of rights has expanded dramatically since World War II. It illuminates for the reader the historical developments in each of the major categories of rights, including human rights, civil rights, women’s rights, patient rights, and animal rights.

Carl Wellman is Hortense and Tobias Lewin Distinguished University Professor in the Humanities at Washington University of St. Louis. He teaches and does research in ethics and philosophy of law. His current philosophical investigations are in general theory of rights, both legal and moral. Previous books include The Language of Ethics, Challenge and Response, Welfare Rights, A Theory of Rights, and An Approach to Rights.
