This book describes the process of logging the Adirondacks, a discreet area of ​​six million acres, and how practices changed between 1850 and 1950.

Welsh was Associate Curator in the Department of Civil History, National Museum of History and Technology, now the National Museum of American History, 1959-1969. As curator he played a major role in the development of the Growth of the United States Hall in the Museum. Welsh was Assistant Director General of Museums, 1969-1970, and also served as Director of the Office of Museum Programs, 1970-1971.
