Tom Fox Was My Friend. Yours, Too.

What meaning can be found in the life and death of Tom Fox? In this book, more than two dozen authors grapple with this question, from a wide range of perspectives. Their reflections are paired with passages from Tom's own writings, his blog entries and emails. On November 25, 2005, Tom Fox was kidnaped in Baghdad, Iraq, along with three comrades. All four were members of a Christian Peacemakers Team, working to exhibit a spirit of peace and reconciliation in a land riven by war and terror. His three colleagues were freed by British and U.S. troops on March 23, 2006. But almost two weeks earlier, on March 10, Tom's body was found in a garbage dump in the city; he had been murdered. Tom had written that he was ready to face death in the work of peacemaking, and that this was his call as a Christian. Such a sacrifice, he said, would be worth it. Was it? Chuck Fager is a writer, editor and peace worker. He was a fellow member of Langley Hill Friends Meeting in Virginia with Tom Fox. When Tom and his colleagues were kidnaped, Chuck and another of Tom’s friends maintained a nightly vigil, searching the internet for news of Tom and the others. They updated an emergency blog, freethecaptivesnow.org every night for readers around the world, until the three survivors were freed. Afterward, Chuck compiled and edited these reflections as a personal tribute to Tom’s witness and memory.
