Having cycled the length and breadth of the British mainland, it was time for a change. After seeing a little blue cycle route sign on the west coast of Scotland, Julia was struck with inspiration. The islands of the Outer Hebrides beckoned. There was just one problem, her boyfriend wanted to go too! Looking on the bright side he could be responsible for navigating and could take most of the luggage. Well, that was the plan. Little did she realise that with her boyfriend there also came his smelly footwear and holey cycling leggings.

Bicycles, Boats and Bagpipes is a detailed and often amusing account of a 500 mile cycle journey through the beautiful and remote islands of the Outer Hebrides and along the mountainous northwest coast of the Scottish mainland.

But it wasn’t all about the cycling; there were the rare flower-rich machairs of the Western Isles, idyllic white sandy beaches, blue seas, wild moorland and ancient historic sites to explore. Wildlife to watch. Ferries to sail. Cake to eat and tea to drink. And throughout the trip the experience of isolated communities going about their daily lives, such a contrast from the hustle and bustle of home.
