In 1940, World War II has begun and the Nazis steamroll the French Army and the British Expeditionary Force. Sophie Sollar, M.D., a Jewish surgeon, flees France and the certain antisemitism the Nazis will impose. Sophie and her cousin, Hélène, hide their identity and open a women’s clinic in the far southwest of Tunisia hoping to escape the war. When the Americans invade North Africa, the war comes to Tunisia. An American pilot, Danny Booker, crashes near the clinic amidst the German army and is rescued by Sophie. The escape of Sophie, Hélène and Danny from the Germans becomes a trial of nerves and stamina. Sophie stays with the US Army as a doctor and Danny resumes his role as an intelligence officer. It’s war and the story takes unexpected twists.
