There is reason beyond science for the creation of an Atheist. Most children inherit religion from their ancestors. Family beliefs run deep in the heart of a child, and when it is a moral conviction to a devoted family, Atheism casts a very emotional light on Christianity. The heartfelt response from a lifelong Atheist is far more profound than from the adult Christian who has logically abandoned his Church out of respect for scientific fact.
Childhood religious indoctrination is a powerful force that is as intense to the child raised by a loving, caring Atheist family as it is to the most devout Christian.
For our author, living as an Atheist was a defining challenge during the 50’s when the Cold War raged and Atheists were labeled Communist. The challenge expanded when he was 18 and his father began an agonizing, three-year, cancer-driven trip and died at 51. Twenty-years later his life exploded with the hiking death of his only child.
This is a love story of a lifelong Atheist and his wife: a Catholic who abandoned her church as a teen. Theirs is a spiritual search to give purpose to their son’s death. Their quest is described in true-life anecdotes that reach far beyond the confines of organized religions to the ultimate destination of the truly free essence of an innate human soul: A spirit that could never survive in the closeted, masculine environment of a male God and His Son.
