What does it feel like when we are anxious? Do we notice the sensations in our body? Are we able to name them? Or do we, like so many of us, push through them, ignoring our body’s sensations as if they are unnecessary?
When we override our body’s sensations we can feel topsy-turvy, like a boat on dry shore no longer buoyant and able to center. Or like a ballon tethered to our body from the ceiling.
This is a learned behavior which means we can teach ourselves something new. There are wiser ways to re-wire our nervous system and teach our children to help themselves when they reach the point of overload.
When we learn emotional regulation tools at an early age, we carry them in our somatic "back-pocket" and can access them throughout our life. Simple repetitions will establish embodiment and calm over time. We will sense our body as a safe place where we can navigate our feelings.
Meditation, somatic and emotional regulation tools give children the ability to settle and tune in to themselves. Emotional regulation is a gift we can give ourself and those we love.
