Terence’s first play is noteworthy for its muting of female voices, take on slavery and freedom, and experimentation with a secondary plot line. Sander M. Goldberg is Distinguished Research Professor of Classics, at the University of California, Los Angeles, USA. He has published widely on the Roman theatrical tradition as well as producing specific studies of Terence, including a monograph and commentary on one of Terence’s most problematic plays, the Hecyra.
