Considering Climate Change

In Considering Climate Change, Kimberley R. Miner focuses on what will happen in the next 20, 40, and 60 years around the planet and looks at how we can take an active role in planning for a future we had hoped to avoid.

Each chapter is framed around a central concern that will be familiar to all those thinking about climate change and suffering the eco-anxiety that such an enormous challenge can trigger. Miner carefully unpacks these concerns, walking the reader through issues such as future economics and investing, the housing market, food availability, water availability, and infrastructure and pollution impacts. Each chapter also includes input from experts, including a farmer, a glaciologist, and a Wall Street executive, who guide the reader through their best understanding of the future and how to prepare for it.

Considering Climate Change can either be read cover to cover or with a focus on the specific chapters that will help the reader understand the challenges they are currently facing. Either way, the goal is to walk away with a better understanding of how to thrive in this changing world, and not just have hope for the future--but to have a plan.

Kimberley R. Miner is an Earth Scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, where her research on climate risks has taken her to some of the planet’s most extreme environments--from the icy expanse of the North Pole to the rugged heights of Mt. Everest and the desolate cold of Antarctica. Kimberley is a passionate advocate for science communication, and her work has reached global audiences through features in the BBC, New York Times, and GQ, and with a Guinness World Record. Beyond NASA, Kimberley has tackled climate security issues with the Department of Defense in Washington, DC, and currently holds research professorships at both the University of Maine and Virginia Tech. Outside of her scientific endeavors, she’s a Black belt and a certified wilderness firefighter, and she lives in a fishing harbor on the Pacific Ocean.
