Biosafety and Biosecurity: Practical Insights and Applications for Low and Medium-Income Countries

There are many guidelines, protocols and advisories that outline how biosafety and biosecurity can be adopted by institutions around the world. Whilst helpful, many of these are tailored to affluent Western nations. This leaves developing nations far behind since their laboratories and institutions are resource-scarce and biosafety and biosecurity are not mainstreamed entirely among the different laboratory workers, healthcare professionals, researchers, and academics.

Biosafety and Biosecurity: Practical Insights and Applications for Low and Middle-Income Countries aims to bridge this gap by comprehensively summarizing the state and development of biosafety and biosecurity in developing and developed nations in a comparative analysis. This book includes basic concepts and principles of biosafety and biosecurity, including certification and legal frameworks, both international and local, and biosafety and biosecurity across disciplines including environmental, medical, and special topics that are relevant to countries with comparable conditions. This proposed book solves the problem of the lack of a prescribed professional title that comprehensively summarizes the state and development of biosafety and biosecurity throughout the world, allowing the reader a 360 view of the subject area.

Jonathan Jaime G. Guerrero is a Doctor of Medicine in the College of Medicine at the University of the Philippines, Manila, Philippines. He holds a Master of Science in Plant Pathology and a Bachelor of Science in Biology.

Rohani Cena-Navarro is an Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the University of the Philippines Manila, Philippines. In 2019, she was awarded Outstanding Veterinarian (Research) by the Veterinary Practitioners Association of the Philippines, and in 2016 won the CLIMBVIB Scholarship Award in Milan, Italy.

Raul V. Destura is a Professor at the University of the Philippines Manila. He is also Deputy Director for Strategic Initiatives and Emerging Programs, NIH Philippines, and Deputy Executive Director, at the Philippine Genome Center. He was awarded Fortunato Dela Pea Scientist of the Year.

Marian P. De Leon is the Director of the UPLB Museum of Natural History at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines. She pioneered research on the exploration of Philippine caves for novel and potential microorganisms as well as the antibiogram profile of pathogenic strains. Dr. De Leon is a graduate of the University of the Philippines Los Baños with a BS in Food Technology (Major in Microbiology) and an MS in Food Science (Major in Biochemistry). She then earned her PhD in Engineering with a Major in Material and Life Science from Osaka University.

Kin Israel R. Notarte is currently pursuing a Ph.D in Pathobiology (Microbiology and Infectious Disease) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland, USA. He has completed a Doctor of Medicine and MSc In Microbiology at the University of Santo Tomas, and a BSc in Biology at Silliman University, Philippines.

Mark Angelo O. Balendres was a University Researcher at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines, until the end of 2022. He has published more than 40 refereed journal articles and, in 2022, Pest Management Award in Research from the Pest Management Council of the Philippines.
