Part I dives into the methods and principles of business communication employed by stage managers and discusses how these techniques are best implemented throughout a theatrical process, all supported with real-life examples. It also offers discussion questions and resources to enhance the content and encourages the reader to self-analyze their own communication techniques during the production process. Part II contains excerpts from other industry professionals who offer their own unique perspective as to the collaborative and communicative work of stage managers and how their own artistic careers are impacted by the communication systems of a stage management team.

Casey L. Sammarco (she/her) is the Associate Teaching Professor of Stage Management at Florida State University, where she serves as Director of the Stage Management program. She is passionate about industry service and regularly holds leadership positions at SETC, USITT, and the SMA. Casey holds a BA in Theatre and Spanish from UNC Wilmington, an MFA in Stage Management from University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and a Graduate Certification in Project Management from Florida State University. Casey is also a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association and has primarily worked in regional theatres across the United States. In addition to teaching, Casey maintains a successful stage management career spanning theatre, dance, opera, and events.
