Luis H. Reyes, Ph.D.
Luis H. Reyes, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at Universidad de Los Andes (Bogotá, Colombia), where he leads research at the intersection of biological engineering and therapeutic delivery systems. He holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Universidad Industrial de Santander (Colombia) and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Texas A&M University.
Dr. Reyes brings extensive postdoctoral experience from prestigious institutions, including the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (Golden, Colorado), where he contributed to sustainable energy research. His postdoctoral work at Texas A&M University focused on optimizing carotenoids production through metabolic engineering and process development. At the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana’s Institute for the Study of Inborn Errors of Metabolism, he advanced research in metabolic disorders and therapeutic approaches.
His current research program spans multiple domains of biotechnology and biomedical engineering. He leads an interdisciplinary team developing bionanoconjugated vehicles for therapeutic molecule delivery, with applications in gene and enzyme replacement therapies. His work also encompasses the discovery and production of peptides for medical, food, and petrochemical applications, alongside innovative research in food engineering, including sensory design of beer and dairy protein alternatives.
His interdisciplinary approach combines tools from molecular and synthetic biology, reverse engineering of microorganisms, laboratory adaptive evolution, and microbiology to design and develop innovative bioprocesses and bioproducts.
Juan C. Cruz, Ph.D.
Juan C. Cruz, Ph.D., is a distinguished researcher and engineer at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Universidad de Los Andes (Bogotá, Colombia), where he has been advancing the frontiers of nanobiotechnology since 2016. He holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the National University of Colombia and earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Kansas State University, where his innovative work established a new platform for enzyme immobilization in non-aqueous media.
Dr. Cruz’s career spans both academic excellence and industrial innovation. As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at The Johns Hopkins University, he conducted pioneering research on peptide-peptide interactions in model lipid bilayers, employing advanced techniques such as Förster Resonance Energy Transfer and Neutron Diffraction. His work included the synthesis and modification of peptide sequences with various chemistries, including fluorophores and polymers.
In the industrial sector, Dr. Cruz served as Head of New Product Development at CarboQuímica, where he led transformative initiatives in nanomaterial applications for the plastics industry. His achievements include developing multifunctional nanomaterials for plastic processing additives and successfully implementing a new family of green stabilizers. His leadership in R&D+i encompassed strategic planning, team management, and the application of TRIZ and Design Thinking methodologies to solve complex technical challenges.
His academic career includes positions as Senior Lecturer at the University of Adelaide and Assistant Professor at Universidad de Antioquia, where he contributed to both research and education in chemical engineering. Currently, he brings more than fifteen years of expertise in industrial and medical biotechnology to his research programs. His work focuses on the development of nanobiocatalysts, fundamental studies of protein interactions (protein-protein, protein-surface, and protein-lipid), design of nanoparticulate vehicles for drug delivery, and investigation of membrane-active peptides.
His multidisciplinary approach combines expertise in plastics engineering, innovation management, advanced microscopy techniques, and biotechnology, making him a leading voice in the development of novel biomedical technologies and nanomaterial applications.
