Digital Product Design and Manufacturing

Digitalization concepts and methods have, in recent times, drawn the interest of researchers and academics, especially in design and manufacturing. Modern product design integrates advanced CAD/CAE/CAPP/CAM/PLM and computational tools as a means to automate tasks and increase the quality of the designed product, while reducing manufacturing cost and the time-to-market. The same is true that in the era of artificial intelligence, digital manufacturing is a fast-expanding focus of research that includes not only pure manufacturing topics but also additive manufacturing, reverse engineering, simulations of material properties for strength, manufacturability, and optimization of manufacturing processes.

The book aims to cover digital tools and methods that offer additional advantages for designing and manufacturing products in a variety of industries. Furthermore, the book reviews green digital design and green digital manufacturing in the context of a circular economy.

Gheorghe Oancea has a diploma degree (1990) in Manufacturing Engineering from Transylvania University, Brasov, Romania. He has a PhD (1997) in Manufacturing Engineering, and he became PhD supervisor in 2009 and coordinated nine PhD theses and two postdoctoral researchers. Since 2003, he has been a full professor at the Manufacturing Engineering Department at Transylvania University, Romania and he is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activity in CAD/CAE/CAPP/CAM Systems and Manufacturing Technologies. Professor Oancea was the Head of Manufacturing Engineering Department (2011-2016) and Dean of Technological Engineering and Industrial Management Faculty (2016-2024), Transylvania University of Brasov, Romania. Professor Gheorghe Oancea has authored and co-authored 18 books/book chapters, two patents and more than 180 scientific publications from which 80 Clarivate - WoS indexed (33 in peer reviewed journals and 47 in conference proceedings). He has papers in numerous Clarivate - WoS conferences and served as chairman, co-chairman, invited keynote speaker and member of the International Scientific Committees. He is also a reviewer for several important scientific journals and international conferences. His current research interests are in innovative manufacturing technologies, CAD/CAE/CAPP/CAM systems, additive manufacturing, and reverse engineering.

Panagiotis Kyratsis (www.kyratsis.com) is the Head of the Department of Product and Systems Design Engineering, University of Western Macedonia, Greece. He is the Director of the Institute of Traditional Architecture and Cultural Heritage, University Research Centre ＂TEMENUS＂ and Director of the Computational Design and Digital Fabrication Research Laboratory. Prof. Panagiotis Kyratsis received his PhD in CAD-based manufacturing process simulations from the Department of Production Engineering and Management, Technical University of Crete, Greece. He holds a diploma in Mechanical Engineering from the Aristotle’s University of Thessaloniki - Greece, and he received his M.Sc. in Automotive Product Engineering and M.Sc. in CAD/CAM from Cranfield University - UK, in 1997 and 1999 respectively. He has been involved in a number of industrial projects, and he has a great deal of expertise in both the design and the manufacturing aspects of product development. His main research interests include advanced manufacturing, machining, CAD/CAM/CAE systems, product design, reverse engineering and prototyping. He has published more than 20 books and more than 200 papers in Scientific Journals and International Conferences. He acts as member of the editorial board and reviewer to numerous scientific journals and holds 12 industrial designs and two patents registered within the Greek Patent Office.
