A translation to English of the highly influential Hijas del Muntu, the chapters of this edited collection illuminate life experiences and examine narrative threads and traces of identity whose common theme is the history of struggle for equal rights and participation in society. María Mercedes Jaramillo is Emerita Professor at Fitchburg State University. She was President of the Association of Colombianist (2011-2013). Her research explores Latin American theater, women writers and Colombian literature and culture.

Lucía Ortiz is Spanish Professor in the Department of Humanities at Regis College in Massachusetts. Her research focuses on Afro-Latin American literature and women’s literature.
