Slow Psychiatry: Human Rights and Democratic Mental Health

Slow Psychiatry analyses the way in which the industrial model of mental health is currently organised and suggests a counterculture to allow for deeper psychiatry.

João G. Pereira is a pioneer in the implementation of Slow Psychiatry and open dialogue, and he uses his clinical experience to highlight how these principles can be applied in the organisation of mental health services and the practice of psychiatry. The proposed alternatives focus on the democratisation of mental health and policy, exploring current failures with neuroscience and ＂fast-paced＂ approaches to treatment, instead seeking to explore more humane and effective mental health services that prioritise agency and community.

João G. Pereira is research and development director at Romao de Sousa Foundation in Portugal and an academic lecturer at Metanoia Institute in London in Research and Doctoral Programs. He is the president of the International Community for Democratic and Relational Practices (former INDTC) and has contributed to develop Dialogic practices in several contexts.
