The Eclipse of Council Housing

First published in 1994, this book explores the birth, growth and decline of public housing in Britain, weighing up its merits and weaknesses. It traces the development of a state housing policy and looks closely at council housing as a lived experience rather than merely as economic artefact.

Ian Cole was, at the time of original publication, Head of the Housing Division, School of Urban and Regional Studies, Sheffield Hallam University.

Dr Robert Furbey was a Principal Lecturer in Urban Sociology and Politics at Sheffield Hallam University until his retirement in 2010. He also contributed work for the Centre for Regional and Economic Social Research, including a study for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation on Tenant Participation. He also contributed to the development of the National Certificate in Tenant Participation in South Yorkshire.
