Breanna J. McDaniel is the author of two previous picture books, Hands Up! and Impossible Moon. A proud alumna of Emory University and Simmons University, she holds a Ph.D. from Cambridge University, where she focused her research on surveillance and respectability politics in representations of Black children as food in contemporary picture books. She lives in Atlanta.

Olivia de Castro is an illustrator and graphic designer. She grew up in a Dominican-Colombian family in New Jersey and graduated from Pratt Institute with a degree in Communications Design. She has designed for companies like Plate Magazine, The Bad Collective, Abrams Books, Scholastic and Okayplayer.

Olivia’s illustration style combines bold traditional line work and bright color palettes. People-watching on the subway in Brooklyn fueled her love for culturally diverse and expressive characters in storytelling. When she’s not illustrating, you can find her binging true crime documentaries and cooking spicy food in her kitchen.
