A discourse on the varied forms and styles of creation and the pressure upon those who wish to create, Call Me Cassie follows, over several days, the struggles of a young and frustrated dilettante as he does battle with demons real, imagined and self-imposed. Flecked with touches of subtle-dry humour and irony, this New Tragedy’s protagonist, Benny Bitumen, is beset on all sides by everyday difficulties as well as issues of emotional, theological and moral natures. In fighting unforeseen forces and material foes alike, Benny represents an artistic but constrained Everyman character whose thoughts fly further than his reality could ever gratify, and epitomises the challenges facing the twenty-first century creative.
