Always the dreamer, Tommy Tucker's one desire is to become like his Uncle Ned. Imagine never having to "work" for the rest of your life. One day, this fifteen-year-old explorer discovers an ancient pirate map on the outskirts of St. Johnsbury, Vermont.
Tommy learns the location and contents of Sir Walter Preston's, alias The Jackal, buried treasure chests. With his parents refusing to lend him money, Tommy sets out to earn money through get-rich-quick schemes to pay for his expeditions. Desperate to make money, Tommy takes on a newspaper route and entices the aide of two friends, David Drake and James Piston.
Always fearful of someone stumbling onto his treasure, Tommy decides to cheat in order to win the annual relay kayak race. Matters worsen when Tommy lies to cover up his cheating. After he realizes his mistakes, Tommy breaks open his piggybank and leads his team to the buried treasure. What he discovers is far more valuable than he ever dreamed possible.
