The author writes, "This book is modeled on a book of Chinese and Japanese poems that I gave to a friend on the west coast. It was a very small book with a yellow cover, stapled together. No adornments. Just the poems, alive after hundreds of years. The original edition was stapled and sized to fit in a shirt pocket."
A fine first collection in the style of Gary Snyder and Mary Oliver. Most of the poems are set in Woodstock, N.Y., Maine, and Hawaii. The writing is clear and vivid, in the Asian tradition. It is a special pleasure to read the work of a writer earning his or her voice, gaining force along the way. "The Book With The Yellow Cover" and the collections that follow belong with the best in contemporary American poetry.
