It's all in store for Jake Taylor - private eye, one-time college professor, and bad credit risk, but he doesn't know it yet. Jake thinks he's been hired to take some dirty pictures of a cheating girlfriend in the man-made city in Null Space in which he lives, instead he finds himself framed for murder, evicted from his home, and owing a gangster from another planet more money than he can obtain through his drug-fueled investigations. And that's just the first week of the assignment.

Before Jake is done he'll be beaten, drugged, kidnapped, shipped to another planet, and find a girlfriend who might be more interested in seeing who has it in for Jake than actually seeing him live through it.

Set in the 22nd century where the greatest discovery in the history of human migration has been privatized, electronic interconnectedness is universal and omnipresent, and poolside in Vegas is still a nice place to be, what does an average guy have to do to make a buck?
