portal called a "Convolution," which opens them to pocket universes where reality takes on as many forms as there are concepts of it.

In the concluding episode of this serial novel Richard, Nancy and the Professor are brought into the skyscrapter sized treehome of the Lord of the Woods.
They are treated like the heroes they are, but for some reason Richard is singled out to be sacrificed to the being that lives in the center of the tree.
