Thanks to the support of Lieutenant Bridges, an American police officer on an exchange visit with Croydon CID, Jill finds herself involved with the investigation of a series of murders and corruption that shakes Croydon to its core. A seemingly simple case of speeding along a Croydon thoroughfare provides the link that takes Jill to the very top of local politics in her investigation. The disappearance of Mary Hewitt, the secretary to the Leader of the Council, blows the case wide open and introduces Jill to the woman who will figure larger in her life than she could ever imagine. When Jill starts to poke her nose into places where it’s not wanted, she is attacked on two sides.
