A collection of short stories ranging wildly in subject matter, from love, insecurity and societal pressures, through to terrifying tales of ghosts and darkness. ’The Darkness on Honesty Mountain’ is set on a New Zealand mountain which, for some unknown reason, isn’t listed on any map. Jack is desperate for work, and will soon find out how the mountain got its name. A young man comes to terms with regular visitations in ’There’s a Ghost in My Bed’, but things may not be so clear-cut. ’Concealer’ is the story of a brief encounter between a male sex worker and one of his clients, which highlights insecurities around love, acceptance, and physical attraction. ’Alone with the Kōwhai Tree’ is the journal of an unnamed person who spent a hideous week alone in back country Aotearoa. ’After the Crash’ tells the touching yet disturbing story of a friendship forged from carnage and death. Also included is 人性 (’Humanity’), a poem written in Chinese, and its English translation.
