Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was granted British nationality in 1886, having originally been born in Poland. His prose style and contributions to English literature influenced countless other writers, such as Salman Rushdie, William Faulkner, Graham Greene and T S Eliot. His his travels were a major influence on his writing. Other major successes include The Secret Agent and Under Western Eyes.

Brian Busby was born, raised and educated in Montreal. A writer and literary historian, he is the author of Character Parts: Who’s Really Who in CanLit and A Gentleman of Pleasure, a biography of the expatriate figure John Glassco. His critical essays have appeared in The Literary Review of Canada, The Anitgonish Review and a number of other literary publications. Busby is the editor of several anthologies of prose and poetry, including In Flanders Fields and Other Poems of the First World War. He lives with his wife and daughter outside Stratford, Ontario.
