Wren (philosophy, Loyola U., Chicago) provides a new introduction, setting his ideas in contemporary context, and suggesting how he might write the book differently today. Following the path of what philosophers call metaethics, he says, he does not analyze particular moral problems, but ponders how the concepts and language used in formulating and solving them--such as "right" and "obligatory"--have significance and power over people. The 1974 edition was published by Precedent Publishing as Agency and Urgency. Some of the material had been published in journals even before that.
