American scholar of French Gregory has written books about Diderot and Pascal, among other topics. Here she identifies contributions to the 18th-century spirit of freedom by Montesquieu, Diderot, Rousseau, Voltaire, and Condorcet. The ideals expressed by these philosophers helped inspire both the American and the French revolutions. She also includes a chapter from her Evolutionism in Eighteenth-Century French Thought on how various French philosophers contributed to the abolitionist movement in France.
